Arabic Graffiti
In the light of the Arab revolutions that currently bring sweeping changes to the Middle East, this book keeps an eye on the fascinating developments of graffiti and street art in this region.
Whether on the freight trucks of Lebanon, along village alleyways in Bahrain, on the bullet-riddled walls of Palestine, or adorning the walls of Western metropolises and designer bags, Arabic script has experienced a revival. Graffiti writers are increasingly experimenting with calligraphy on walls, and young designers are creating new fonts and type designs in books, galleries and public spaces. At times, Arabic graffiti voices the suffering of a nation, while in other contexts it serves as a quest for identity. Regardless whether the writing is in Beirut, Gaza, Tehran, Paris, London, Berlin or Montréal, Arabic graffiti cries out personal and national ideas in expressive calligraphic and typographic words.
“Arabic Graffiti” brings together artists, graffiti writers and typographers from the Middle East and around the world who merge Arabic calligraphy with the art of graffiti writing, street art and urban culture. In addition to a rich assortment of photos featuring Arabic graffiti and street art styles, it includes essays by distinguished authors and scene experts, in which they explore the traditional elements, modern approaches, and the socio-political and cultural backgrounds which have shaped Arabic graffiti movements in the Middle East.

Art in the Streets
Curated by Jeffrey Deitch, Roger Gastman and Aaron Rose,
the first major museum exhibition on
the history of graffiti and street art,
Art in the Streets, opens at MOCA next month.
These Delight
had the opportunity to work on the accompanying book
which traces the birth and dissemination of styles
through the stories of graffiti writers
and street artists all over the world,
and features interviews and discussions
with influential street artists.
These Delight was there for a few of the monumental
discussions in this book,
including the one on cholo graffiti,
for which Cheech Marin interviewed
Chaz Bojorquez, Estevan Oriol and Gusmano Cesaretti
(who fed Roger’s dog strawberries under the table).
These Delight also attended the one on Wild Style,
a discussion between Jeffrey Deitch, Carlo McCormick,
Fab Five Freddy, Lee, Charlie Ahearn and Patti Astor.
The discussion took place at Deitch’s home,
and during the lunch break, Lee swam in the pool
and These Delight dipped my feet in as we
discussed some of our experiences growing up.
In addition, These Delight wrote the
intro for the Los Angeles graffiti chapter,
“From Yards to Heavens,” for which Roger
and These Delight interviewed
graffiti legends Eklips, Prime, Risk,
Slick, Soon and Wisk.
Pre-order it here.

PhotoHanger
Photo Hanger
is a hanger shaped paperclip, designed by Juta Kan.
It is made with a thin steel wire shaped as
a clip in the form of a miniature clothes hanger.
Photo Hanger is designed to display photos,
and favorite post cards.
Have fun
– hang them on a thin line of monofilament,
as if on a clothes line,
or on a push pin on a bulletin board.

Public service announcement from Melbourne, Australia
-Apparently the Victorian government (Melbourne, Australia)
recently passed a law enabling police to
arrest or fine on the spot (WTF?)
any person caught carrying spray paint…
How the fuck this makes sense is completely
mind boggling to any rational thinking person since
A. its completely legal to purchase spray paint.
B. Since its legal to purchase how can it be illegal to posses it.
-I think it would make much more sense
(Although still entirely retarded)
to enforce this law to say…
umm maybe a hammer or screwdriver,
since that is obviously MUCH more
dangerous thing to carry in public.
What the hell is up with all this
hysteria of graffiti anyways!???
-after all, its JUST A COAT OF PAINT ON A WALL.
And how the hell does Australia get off
being all high and mighty over crime in the first place!?
-Did y’all forget you are the descendants
of the most undesirable criminals and derelicts of England…
So much so that they were exiled from the entire continent!
-Watch out grandpa,
you might just get arrested for walking
home with that can of paint you just bought
from the hardware store to paint your BBQ with…
